Electronic Warfare in a World Populated by Metasurfaces
Nov. 21 | 2 PM ET

In the last decades, Electronic Warfare (EW) evolved from a simple clash between static systems to a highly complex combat framework with plenty of reconfigurable systems optimizing their tasks on the fly. Today, one can consider that the platforms, which interact with electromagnetic waves, and the EW environment, which works as the communication channel, are electronically static. In this scenario, reconfigurability is essentially performed by software modules and the radio hardware they control. This webinar describes how metasurfaces can add extra layers of dynamism to the core of the EW problem–including the platforms and the environment itself.

Metasurfaces are artificially engineered structures composed of unit cells that can be polarized when excited by electromagnetic waves. The subwavelength dimensions of the unit cells allow the structure to be treated as an effective surface impedance. Moreover, their resonating nature allows one to obtain arbitrary reflection, transmission and absorption coefficients from each cell, unlocking the dynamic shaping of electromagnetic waves. In some years, metasurfaces will be deployed everywhere in the cities and the ordinary man will get used to them. Unavoidably, they will be also extensively exploited for military purposes.

Exploring New Advancements in the field of Directed Energy Weapons

In this episode of From the Crow's Nest, host Ken Miller is joined by Dr. Christopher Lloyd, Senior Technologist for Directed Energy with The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Virginia.

The pair check in on several recent developments in the promising field of directed energy weapons (DEWs). Dr. Lloyd says that senior leaders with the Navy have realized that directed energy weapons can play an integral part in multi-domain operations. New prototypes and stronger ties between the Office of the Secretary of Defense, academia and industry partners make the capability one with few limits on its utility. Dr. Lloyd details how two directed energy weapon programs — the Optical Dazzling Interdictor (ODIN), a low-power laser system, and the the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance (HELIOS) system —  have been significant wins for the Navy in allowing its sailors to become more proficient with this new technology.

Mission Capabilities at the Speed of the Fight
Our adversaries are formidable, and the battle for control of the electromagnetic spectrum gets harder every day. The signal environment is dense, and adversaries’ electronic warfare (EW) systems are increasingly complex and resilient. They use a broader range of the spectrum, advanced waveforms, and networked capabilities, and they have access to high-performance hardware that can be rapidly reprogrammed.
