Fragile Like a Bomb - Not Fragile Like a Flower: Women Behind USAF ICBMs

The intercontinental ballistic missileers sit alert each hour of every day to provide the nation's unstoppable nuclear deterrent. In honor of International Women's Day, teams of female missileers across all ICBM wings participated in a coordinated, simultaneous training launch. This key-turn simulation was the first time a training launch of this nature has occurred and offers, as all historic moments do, a chance to look back on how far we've come.

SDR For Strategic COMINT Applications
March 23 | 2 p.m. ET

Software defined radio "SDR" technology has been around for decades. Some of the benefits have been limited to the COMINT receiver vendors. In this presentation we focus more on the benefits for the end-user. We go through some general advantages of SDR technology and more specific benefits it brings to strategic COMINT monitoring systems. We will look at SDR enabled COMINT receiver functionality and how to combine it with a modular HW architecture to improve the reusability of the equipment for various missions. The presentation examines how to use SDR technologies with related technologies and concludes with an outlook of possible SDR enabled functionality in COMINT.

The Arctic Frontier: A New Security Battleground

The power struggle between the US and China is all too familiar. After the Chinese-operated balloon traveled from the Aleutian Islands down to the US Heartland, the defense community is speculating if this was simply another chapter in our power struggle or if China is seeking specific intelligence from the US. In this episode, Ken Miller talks with journalist Michael Fabey about the implications of the Chinese-operated balloon and how the Arctic region is emerging as a new global security frontier.

Michael Fabey is an award-winning journalist and author currently researching the US Arctic region and the implications this region holds for global security. Ken and Michael discuss what information China likely received through the balloon, why the US took so long to address it and the likelihood that a US homeland attack would occur in the Aleutian Island-Arctic region.

Ken also commends the new podcast D-Fence, hosted by Dr. Alix Valenti. You can learn more about her and the podcast here.

HOC Spotlight: Women in EW

In celebration of Women’s History Month, this episode honors the contributions of three women whose discoveries, inventions and insights made a lasting impact on electromagnetic spectrum operations and, in some cases, helped turn the tides of war: Florence Violet McKenzie, Joan Curran and Hedy LaMarr. To help us tell these stories, we turn to Author David Duffy and Author Kimberly Moravec. The guest narrator is Ms. Shelley Frost, the first woman Executive Director of the Association of Old Crows. While we celebrate these and other women's achievements during Women’s History Month, we must also acknowledge that women in Electronic Warfare have faced significant barriers in their careers, even barriers to simply be considered equal members of society. This episode is dedicated to all women of Electronic Warfare – past, present and future.
