Low SWAP Multifunctional Electronic Warfare System Development
July 14 | 2-3 p.m. EDT

With today’s increasingly sophisticated threats in the global defense battlefield and the proliferation of Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD), technology must rise to meet the challenge of complex missions – particularly for those operating across the electromagnetic spectrum. These missions call for ‘smart’ systems that address multiple threats and perform simultaneous functions, meaning that they need to be adaptive, multifunctional and operate on any platform (whether in the air, at sea, on the ground or unmanned) – all under reduced size, weight and power. New electronic warfare (EW) systems need to possess loosely coupled hardware and software architectures that can keep pace with commercial development cycles. Dated systems built with one specific purpose and function (e.g., one individual system for electronic attack; a different system for electronic support measures, etc.) typically have a large SWAP-C (Size, Weight, And Power, Cost) and increased system complexity which can limit mission effectiveness, slow down critical mission turnaround time and make it harder to keep pace with new threats.

In this webinar, we will review small form factor multifunction EW system design. The discussion will include modular and scalable hardware and software design trades, simulation and performance evaluation. New model-based design workflows will be discussed that enable functional allocation trades to GPUs/FPGAs/Processors through simulation. The discussion will conclude with system performance evaluation and deployment approaches using hardware in the loop simulation and prototype hardware.

Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach
Sept. 12–28 | Mondays & Wednesdays | 1–4 p.m. EDT

This course will cover how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in electronic warfare (EW). AI enables EW systems to respond more quickly and effectively to battlefield conditions with complex and novel emitters. The course will discuss AI-based situation assessment techniques for electronic support (ES), including characterization, classification, patterns of life and intent recognition. The course will cover decision-making techniques for electronic protect (EP), electronic attack (EA) and electronic battle management (EBM), including optimization, temporal tradeoffs and distributed coordination. The course will describe how to handle real-time in-mission learning, motivate why this capability is crucial and discuss how to evaluate a system that learns during a mission. It will cover data management approaches and system architecture. The course is based on the book "Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach."

Nuclear Weapons Policy in the Age of Great Power Competition

In today’s episode of From the Crows’ Nest, Dr. Adam Lowther joins Host Ken Miller to discuss the evolution of US nuclear weapons policy since the end of the Cold War and into this new age of Great Power Competition. Global security is changing rapidly, and we are required to rethink our underlying assumptions, especially as Russia invades Ukraine and China opportunistically takes advantage of current events to strengthen its strategic goals in the Pacific. Dr. Lowther is an author and editor of a new book entitled, Guide to Nuclear Deterrence in the Age of Great-Power Competition. He is currently the Director of Multidomain Operations at the Army Management Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He was the founding director of the US Air Force’s School of Advanced Nuclear Deterrence Studies at Kirtland Air Force Base. The views expressed are his own and do not represent those of the United States government.
