Millimeter Wave (MMW) Propagation
June 2 | 2-3 p.m. EDT

This webinar discusses the nature of radio propagation in the millimeter wave (MMW) frequency range. This is typically considered frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz MMW signals provide significant increases in bandwidth, but also suffer significantly increased losses, which limits link distances, particularly in the atmosphere. Formulas and nomographs are presented to show MMW propagation losses as a function of frequency, distance, rain, fog, atmosphere, and foliage. Calculations are made for links completely within the atmosphere, in space, and between a satellite and a terminal on the Earth. Outline: Frequencies, Antennas, Propagation in the atmosphere, Ranges, Line of sight loss, Atmospheric loss, Rain loss. Foliage loss, Propagation in space, Propagation space to Earth

Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach
Sept. 12-28 | Mondays & Wednesdays | 1-4 p.m. EDT

This course will cover how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in electronic warfare (EW). AI enables EW systems to respond more quickly and effectively to battlefield conditions with complex and novel emitters. The course will discuss AI-based situation assessment techniques for electronic support (ES), including characterization, classification, patterns of life and intent recognition. The course will cover decision-making techniques for electronic protect (EP), electronic attack (EA) and electronic battle management (EBM), including optimization, temporal tradeoffs and distributed coordination. The course will describe how to handle real-time in-mission learning, motivate why this capability is crucial and discuss how to evaluate a system that learns during a mission. It will cover data management approaches and system architecture. The course is based on the book "Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach"

The Role of EMSO in Today’s Conflict

From Ukraine to China, NATO to Congress, a lot has happened in May. In this episode, host Ken Miller talks with JED editor, John Knowles to take a step back and discuss where these topics stand in the EW community. John and Ken particularly discuss how these current conflicts have generated a lot of new interest in EMSO, and they ask the question: how can we move EMSO past this type of episodic interest driven by conflict to become a sustained and managed practice? John and Ken also update us on the new phase of conflict in Ukraine, the role of EMSO in NATO, and what the Russia-Ukraine conflict implies for China and Taiwan.
