To date, the AOC Virtual Series has steered clear of mathematics, but that is about to change! This webinar will tackle the radar and jammer range equations head on to unpack the many layers of information buried in these important results. By the end of this presentation, attendees will have gained a clearer understanding of how the parameters of radar and EW systems interact to determine system performance - the fundamental objective of the radar and jammer range equations. Factors including antenna gain, radar cross section (RCS), effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), coherent processing time, range (yes, really!), and others will be explored to understand what they actually mean in real systems. This course will cover the unified presentation of the fundamental design principles of LPI radar. This includes a thorough treatment of the numerous types of wideband modulations that can be used to reduce the probability of a non-cooperative intercept receiver’s ability to intercept and extract the waveform modulation parameters (which may easily lead to an effective jammer response). We will also cover the intercept receiver time-frequency and bi-frequency signal processing techniques that can extract the wideband waveform parameters. Autonomous classification and parameter extraction algorithms are also an objective such that a real-time jammer response can be developed – just what we did not want to happen! Looking for more immediate learning options? Our on-demand course library has excellent presentations from Dave Adamy, Kyle Davidson, and Warren du Plessis! Find out more here.

The Corps doesn’t own or operate its own MQ-9 Reapers, but Marines deployed to Helmand province, Afghanistan, are looking to bring the iconic hunter-killer drone to support operations in the unstable province. The Defense Department announced on Tuesday that the Navy has awarded a contract of $39,566,023 to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. to provide unmanned aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support “using contractor-owned/contractor-operated MQ-9 Reaper unmanned air systems.” (Marine Corps Times) The Pentagon’s belief in its technology drove the Department of Defense to trust it would have control over the electromagnetic spectrum for years to come, but that decision has left America vulnerable to new leaps in technology from China and Russia, according to a top military official. Gen. Paul Selva, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, has now concluded that the Pentagon needs to ensure it is keeping up with those near-peer nations, let along reestablishing dominance of electronic warfare and networking.
