Afghanistan isn't the same - strange to say, the situation there today seems even more dire than Iraq at the start of 2007. It's a rural country, the Taliban have nested deeply in Pashtun areas, the state is even more hollowed-out than Iraq's, and there is no obvious counterpart to the Sunni tribes that switched sides.
